Girly Game Day: 122 Year OLD RECIPE for Blueberry Muffins

Wednesday was GAME DAY!

I had a half of box of Blueberries in the fridge, and I couldn't find my Blueberry Buckle recipe. I had limited ingredients in the house, so I dug out my Mom's ancient 

Settlement Cook Book. 

I always chortle at the, "Way to a Man's Heart" subtitle. This particular text is over 120 years old, but the Victory edition from 1944.

Gifted to Mom in 1944...from her dear cousin, my mom's writing at the top only, saying for her 'Wedding Shower!'...Gosh the war was still on, my dad was stateside for the first time in almost 5 years...and she was getting married in a month.

The History behind this cookbook is very interesting. First of all it was succinct, easy recipes, with a limited vocabulary and designed to be used by the huge immigrant population we had in every state at the turn of the century.

What a daunting chore to go shopping in the new world markets with all the signs in a different language than you spoke or read. 

We were a huge melting pot and Milwaukee was teaming with...Germans, Poles, Irish, Scandinavian, Beligian, Dutch, African American, South American, Hispanic... all piled into the manufacturing neighborhoods of Milwaukee, south all the way to Chicago, to Gary Indiana. The Great Lakes were the great industrial melting pot of America.

Mom's copy was the 26th edition of the book, labeled the Victory edition. Going back to simple ingredients and how-to's to survive in a war economy...it was always her GO-TO cookbook.

Anyway for game day I chose the simple 100+ year old recipe for Blueberry Muffins. I did make a couple of changes, I used Almond Milk, and good quality margarine (Land-0-Lakes---I am a cheesehead after all) because one of our gals is lactose intolerant. I also added a teaspoon of vanilla, have to ---I'm half Danish.

At our age, we have changed to Almond Milk, for the taste, as well as it has a longer shelf life than milk...extra calcium also. 

This was the smallest muffin...and just chock full of blueberries.

The recipe took very little sugar...so I served with cinnamon/sugar on the side for anyone who wanted it.

Of course Tea or Coffee is mandatory with a muffin.

We are group of four ladies that meet an afternoon every two weeks to play games and Hostess's choice. We are flexible on dates and each take a turn as hostess. 

Senior socialization really is a must...I still haven't joined the local Senior center---as I look at everyone and think I'm not that old...but probably soon. LOL.

The 'GIRLS' ended up playing OLD MAID...with a lot of laughter as the mean age is over 77 for this group. And then 10 rounds of UNO. 

My muffins were a hit...sweetness really just right.

I really like how easy and quick this was, and really can use just one bowl. I have a new stove/oven...and I followed the directions for 425 degrees, despite that my oven usually runs really hot. And they came out perfect. I did give the filled tins a spritz of oil spray to encourage browning.

Again, Almond milk worked well with the Margarine, instead of butter.

Taste and texture was excellent!

PS....I never did one hand of UNO out of 10...which should be 

STATISTICALLY   IMPOSSIBLE!

Our family had property in the middle of Wisconsin surrounded by fields, hills, and nestled on a small chain of lakes. I would take long walks along the creeks and across the fields, the ever changing landscape as it morphed from greens to golden tans and then to the subtle dead grays of November.

Fall----my Favorite Time of Year

This is My Favorite Time of Year!

Here are a few of my old pictures, from older posts---since my camera is dead and I'm still trying to work out the new one!

Fall, the end of our GREEN garden produce.

We usually sojourn up north to Wisconsin. October is spectacular there.

Mixed hardwoods and deep woods welcome Fall, like nowhere else.

Illinois offers many Forest Preserves with stunning prairie and bogs in autumn.

I love the long walks when we get a chance to wander.

And there are always pumpkin farms. The rule---you have to be able to pick it up yourself!

I 'do'd it myself, Grandma!

My home is made for Fall, with grass and earth tones. My prized family Bornholm (Denmark) Pottery comes out!

Jelly Belly Train Tour in Pleasant Prairie, Wisconsin

 Who doesn't love a road trip. My son had off work last week, so we all piled in the mini-van and took my son, daughter-in-law, and the grand on a road trip to Wisconsin. Pleasant Prairie is really just over the border and the weather has been so rotten in Chicagoland, a road trip somewhere sounded great.

 All cinched into the mini van...hands up for getting on our way.

Jelly Belly Candy Company is a 5th generation family owned candy company originally started by two emigrant brothers from Germany, Gustav and Albert Goelitz.

 You can see how miserable the day was. Cheers when we arrived at the Warehouse parking lot.

Grandpa and Daddy and the grand, walkiing to the entrance. Usually the parking lot was full, but thankfully not today. (I used to drive past here when taking care of my parents, all the time.)

 Inside was a display and staging line for the tour, the grand was very excited. The candy company celebrated 100 years in 1969.

 Overhead in the foyer were huge Jelly Belly placards, I mean HUGE!

One wall of the foyer had historical photos of the candy company and family. Jelly Belly has an interesting history. You can find out more history HERE.

Did you know that Governor Ronald Reagan wrote, "We can hardly start a meeting or make a decision without passing a jar of jelly beans," in a letter to the Goelitz manufacturer in 1973.

We all got hats to wear in the warehouse, a health rule, and another chance to sport the JellyBelly logo. The train ride is described here with pictures, Train Warehouse Tour. This was a perfect train ride for the grand, lots of Whooowhooooo!

They would not let us take pictures on the tour or in the train. The tour was reasonably short, the warehouse is huge and we skirted the outside edge. Great displays of vintage candy making and large video screens telling the story of Goelitz family and making of Jelly Bellys.

Last stop was the snack shop and the candy and merchandise store. Which was packed with two tours of people. I had a hard time taking any pictures at all. Most impressive was all the flavors lined up on one wall to be purchased by the pound.

 I was on the lookout for Strawberry Jam and the Red/White/Blue mixture for a friend. I also bought a licorice mixture for my friend E. Good licorice assorteds are kinda rare. There was every kind of merchandise for sale besides candy: tee-shirts, sweats, shoes, toys, desk items, mugs, and bags and bags and cartons of candy

I was very excited to find small bags of Belly Flops---failures in size or shape in sugar-free. And I must say they are delicious. I'm nibbling as I'm writing this, I think my favorites are cinnamon and buttered-popcorn.

It was a fun trip ---perfect for a three-year old to some 60-somethings, lol.

 I'll say one thing...Jelly Belly has no problem with their branding---it was everywhere. This car is parked at the exit---great photo op. The grand is pouting because she did not want to leave. My son was happy to get candy---reasonable to send to my daughter-in-law's family in the Phillipines.

Wow, thats a lot of candy in there. LOL, the grand has lots of cousins! The sun came out---to finish a great day. Tours are available in California and Wisconsin, check it out!

Elkhorn Antique Flea Market~~What a Day in Wisconsin!

Great Finds at HUGE Flea Market in Elkhorn, Wisconsin

This is the first time we had been to this ONE DAY show. Elkhorn's located in southeastern Wisconsin, just north of the popular summer destinations of Lake Geneva and Lake Delavan. Nestled at the western edge of the Kettle Morraine area in rolling hills is the lovely town of Elkhorn. This huge Antique Flea Market is held at the Walworth County Fairgrounds four times a year.

The picture below is only about one-fifth of the exhibitors. Oodles of Fair buildings held indoor exhibits, and really not any questionable exhibits anywhere. Quality was great, prices were great, food stands were everywhere, and even benches to take a rest. The Restrooms were clean and convenient.

We arrived around 9 AM, it opens at 7 AM 

and runs only until 3PM, for ONLY one day???

Very professionally run, excellent attendance, and I did art shows for over thirty years and know when something is well organized and staffed.

Some great furniture among the never ending booths.

Check out this great cabinet, love the yellow, it was---SOLD. There was gorgeous 

furniture of every style, metal cabinets, light fixtures, oak, wicker and more.

Guys Stuff!

Great guys' stuff indoors and out, lots of original vintage signs.

 Heres a KOOLS sign with the penguin, certainly from the 50's -60's.

Primitives and Farm items, it is Wisconsin after all.

I have never seen so much reasonably priced enamelware, and BLUE Jars 

ready for GOING GREEN and be reused for something special.

Jenny Pinnow from Antique Farmer was more than happy to chat about her business, and her great items. This was late in the day, and she said many items were gone. 

She does appraisals online and is located in the area of Delevan.

There was FUNKYstuff too, just look at this OLD weird chair with the 

sunken picture frame in the back,

 it looked original,…but now with the REDO the seat has a flower pot to match. 

The turquoise stools were awesome, too.

Glassware and pottery for any taste

This booth had nice color-coordinated displays of Jadeite, and OLD colored glass. 

The owner was too busy selling and wrapping to chat.

The great booth that led us to Elkhorn was Jeanine Burkhardt's, Chippy Shabby booth which despite her fab directions on her blog, had us wandering through the labyrinth of the unfamiliar layout of the fairgrounds.

This CocaCola sign was sold, about an hour after we saw it. Awesome color and in great condition.

Her booth was packed with customers, and it was hard to get pictures 

without someone jumping in front.

She does great REDO's on vintage items.

I really love her look, she has primitives also! Her displays are always charming

 and make you want to buy the entire vignette.

I really wanted this chandelier, I hope it wasn't sold, so I can get it next time.

So want to REDO it into something NEW.

What we did get!

I got a gift, I can't show****, you know how that goes.

E made a haul!

I waited in the pick up area while E had to wander and try to find the three booths she had bought things from. The huge horses apparently attached themselves to her,

 as she was wheeling back.

The two rocking horses, sans their handles and spring holders, a REDO ready for crafting?

~ Garden horse anyone?~Mosaic horse anyone?~

~Planter?~ Carousel?~

This OLD, hand-carved, oak, 1910-20's reclining woman with a cheetah was probably

 an insert on a piece of furniture, and was only $8 -ready for a REDO and recycle.

The chalk ware Art Deco lady is missing her cigarette,

 but then smoking is bad for your health. 

She has a black marble base and was heavier then heck. 

Also in E's bag was a sweet embroidery, we both had our hands on.

Last, but not least, a 3' x 4' painting of St. Francis of Assisi from a convent.

Yes, E has an eclectic sensibility, but what fun to find so many unusual items.

Like I said, what a DAY the best kind of JUNKING! 

I'm saving my pennies for the September Show, 

and we will go fortified with coffee and with two carts, 

 room in our tummies for cream puffs, and a large map of the Fairgrounds,

 so we can actually find where we are.
