Love is all Around

Ad-Free Blog

We don't decorate for every holiday, but
Love is All Around
our loving home, everyday.
(an old post-updated, but still true!)

Kisses abound in the kitchen.

http://oldnewgreenredoblog.blogspot.com

Open Hearts serve...a dish perfect for sharing treats here.

http://oldnewgreenredoblog.blogspot.com

The back stairs, says it all,  "Home is where the heart is."

http://oldnewgreenredoblog.blogspot.com

My only purchases for Valentine's day this year---two sets of measuring spoons from WorldMarket for my daughters-in-love, 6 vintage Jell-O molds from the 1950s or so for 50 cents each at GoodWill, a Mrs.Fields vintage tin, I will fill with goodies for our Grand.

I will make crispy treats--in the molds with sprinkles---and everyone will feel the love.
Baking here is done with lots of butter, and lots of
LOVE.

In the living room, the obvious LOVE all around is not always subtle. This statue a gift from my husband when he used to travel for work. The candlestick was a wedding gift from great-great-great-or more family hand-me-down, hallmarked back to the 1700's.

http://oldnewgreenredoblog.blogspot.com

This card from my son. Nothing shows LOVE more than your children growing
to be caring and thoughtful adults.

http://oldnewgreenredoblog.blogspot.com

Another fixture of LOVE  in our home, the Jule Haerter from Denmark.
Though it reflects Christmas,
to me it means LOVE all year round.
More family photos are in the living room, all precious to our hearts.

In the hall, a shelf with old toys welcomes all ages.

http://oldnewgreenredoblog.blogspot.com

A treasured, hand-stitched Raggedy shows off his heart and the sentiment, we are celebrating.

http://oldnewgreenredoblog.blogspot.com

Hard to read, but none the less loving, I Love You!

http://oldnewgreenredoblog.blogspot.com

Long story---my son loved frogs as a little boy, he's transferred that to me---by gifting many over the last 30 some years. I have 'croaking LOVE all around me, several in the main bathroom and
More than a dozen in the yard.

http://oldnewgreenredoblog.blogspot.com

In the master bath is a framed Rilke quote about the lesson of LOVE, a gift from a friend.
I read it every day at least once.

http://oldnewgreenredoblog.blogspot.com

A plaque with hooks, hopefully saying the truth...I try.

http://oldnewgreenredoblog.blogspot.com

The master bedroom is filled with old things. My great grandmother's LOVE of Pansies,

http://oldnewgreenredoblog.blogspot.com

My mom and dad, and one of her treasured glass baskets.

http://oldnewgreenredoblog.blogspot.com

This odd piece of German unmarked porcelain, a favorite of my mom's filled with feathers from a treasured family trip.

http://oldnewgreenredoblog.blogspot.com

A sweet book, gift from a friend. A quote from inside says it all.
"I never knew how much like heaven this world could be,
when two people LOVE and live for one another!" Little Women, Amy

http://oldnewgreenredoblog.blogspot.com

Out on my dresser for the month is my heart jewelry and the mermaid piece from Hans Christian Anderson's, Little Mermaid.

Sadly, In the original tale, the Mermaid sacrifices all for the Prince, who then marries another and she becomes foam on the sea. Hans had a gloomy streak.

Vintage pieces, a pewter Jule Paper Heart, acorns on porcelain set with pearls, a bakelite heart, an 80's contemporary heart, and beaded bracelet from the 90's.

http://oldnewgreenredoblog.blogspot.com

A the cosmetic bag, a gift from my d-in-love and my mom's dresser mirror---a gift of LOVE from my dad. He unloaded an entire train car of cabbages before high school in 1939 to buy this for my mom.

http://oldnewgreenredoblog.blogspot.com

Cupid on a brass lid to a crystal cut glass jar, circa 1880's. I think it was once plated silver, but just totally rubbed off with pollishing.

http://oldnewgreenredoblog.blogspot.com

An old Valentine, I LOVE to use to cover the black TV.

http://oldnewgreenredoblog.blogspot.com

It's beginning to fade, but I think I will copy the design for a fabric drape over the television.

http://oldnewgreenredoblog.blogspot.com

My husband's office has an old Grandfather's cup and a plaque from the early 1970's about LOVE
I'm blessed with a real romantic for a husband...he will watch, "Sleepless in Seattle" and the original "An Affair to Remember," with Cary Grant and Deborah Kerr  an infinite number of times.
Over the years he has added 'Serendipity', 'High Road to China' and he has the Outlander theme on his phone.

http://oldnewgreenredoblog.blogspot.com

Our engagement dinner, 1967. This is faded. My dress was Barbie pink...the only pink dress I've ever had.

http://oldnewgreenredoblog.blogspot.com

He made this collage for me way back when----all the photos are pre-1985. It hangs in his office.
I always forget it is in here, and then wonder who all those girls are? OMG they were 'me'.

http://oldnewgreenredoblog.blogspot.com

We will celebrate a 50-year marriage, next year(2018)---really, it's hard to believe.
Now it was 56 years, last August.

http://oldnewgreenredoblog.blogspot.com

Our extra bedroom, or Grand's room as it is beginning to be called, is filled with antiques, toys, and books.  Here my grandmother watches over all in a photo from the 1990's.
Now it's my artspace/sowing space and the Grand's hiding space when visiting.

http://oldnewgreenredoblog.blogspot.com

This sweet little quote picture was from a friend. It's from the 1920-30's. Two words have faded at the top, You and I.  I LOVE the sentiment and the stylized artwork. The background is metallic gold---seasoned and in the original frame. (Sadly the gifter has passed, and I miss our shares deeply).

http://oldnewgreenredoblog.blogspot.com

The Grand has the Barbie houses in here, toys and her stash of  toy jewelry. Here is one of her creations of beads and "Tangled" Princess in a necklace. I do love how Disney Princesses have become more self-reliant, and not just something to be rescued and possessed.
That has changed from my childhood.
(Today, 2025, I miss the bits and pieces of childhood, and stickers on every surface in my home...but, LOVE the young lady she is becoming)

http://oldnewgreenredoblog.blogspot.com

Lurking on the shelves, drawers and closets are
old Valentine's and "I Love You" cards from our lives of over fifty years together.
Maybe even one or two belonging to a parent or grandparent.
A sweet bear bank, my mom purchased with LOVE for an unborn grandchild.

http://oldnewgreenredoblog.blogspot.com

So I don't decorate for Valentine's Day because...

Love is all around our home, everyday.

Christmas 2021: Part 2 Tree and Buffet

Christmas in Chicagoland consists of brilliant sunshine, or dark gloom, making photographing a challenge. Waiting for that medium light is a challenge.
oldnewgreenredo

We are passive solar which means our windows are all on the south side, with overhangs that shield the windows during the warmer months, but let the full bolt of sunlight in during the winter months.

Our new windows don't go to the floor like the old ones, but that is a plus.

oldnewgreenredo

The tree is centered and in it's Victorian 'crib' on wheels. That was great for decorating all around the tree.

oldnewgreenredo

Ornament on the left is from family in the late 1800's.
Last year we only put 4 boxes of ornaments up---what came up the stairs is what went on the tree. This year the idea was to go through everything and cull...IMPOSSIBLE.

oldnewgreenredo

Rudy was my hubby's childhood favorite.
We only put on the vintage, glass and favorites...so it is jammed.
Fifty-three Christmases and inheriting ornaments really makes it hard.

oldnewgreenredo

We have half a tote of glass snowmen we didn't even touch. An entire tote of wooden carved Santas, a tote of Santa statues from all around the world, A tote of un-breakables, and multiple totes of village houses and accessories, that we never even got close to having room to put out????

oldnewgreenredo

Each year I would buy a box of glass ornaments, or something unusual, as well as an ornament for every person. Well we inherited my parent's and grandparents also.

oldnewgreenredo

There are memories attached to so many. The striped blown glass ball was from an artist I sat next to for 4 days every year at an art show. We became great friends and I bought one every year!

oldnewgreenredo

I'm a total sucker for gnomes, fairies, and mushrooms.

oldnewgreenredo

The wax angel on the left was a replacement for my grandmother's which melted.
The fairy---I found maybe 10 years ago.

oldnewgreenredo

Hubby has contributed too, Rudolphs and some of his great grandparent's Victorian ornaments. We have two of these Santas...amazing the white fur is over 120 years old.

oldnewgreenredo

The tree is full all the way around---how can we part with any????
We are going to see what the kids want....maybe NEXT year, lol.

oldnewgreenredo

More memories and traditions.  The china cabinet is filled with family Royal Copenhagen and Bing & Grondahl porcelain and figurines. I just add traditional red candles and a few baubles.

oldnewgreenredo

Red candles are traditional in Danish homes---and I have kept up that tradition.

oldnewgreenredo

I will use these dishes for our Christmas Dinner.

oldnewgreenredo

My family was working folk in Denmark, farmers, fishermen, or cabinet makers.

oldnewgreenredo

My mom was partial to the children figurines, while my grandmother had more adult ones and birds.

oldnewgreenredo

We have so many serving pieces.

oldnewgreenredo

I deep cleaned everything for Thanksgiving so they are ready to go.

oldnewgreenredo

Hans Christian Andersen wrote the 'Snow Queen', 'Steadfast Tin Soldier', 'Thumbelina,' 'The Little Mermaid', and so many more fairytales that are part of Christmas traditions everywhere.

oldnewgreenredo

On the buffet, I used family and thrift store found Silver, some polished, some not! Amazing that people gift sterling pieces to thrift stores and they sell them for under $10.

oldnewgreenredo

I've added some silly fairy folk, and little lights with some vintage ornaments.

oldnewgreenredo

All spread over a 'Turkish' weave 1800's tablecloth.  It has just that wonderful deep red color and the right amount of tint to make the old items really popl

oldnewgreenredo

The centerpiece is my largest fairy. I sold these in my store in the late 1990's. And of course kept one. she's sweet and like all the fairies is pose-able with wonderful fly-away hair.

oldnewgreenredo

Such a face....he's just too much fun.

oldnewgreenredo

This 'Pige' (small girl) was one of my mom's favorites. She holds her apron open all year long to catch something magical.

oldnewgreenredo

Grandmother's silver candlesticks with the mini multi-colored lights just sparkling.

oldnewgreenredo

From our home to yours, I am wishing you Happy Holidays and Traditions.
Do enjoy family and friends, safely!
