A Bit of Spring in my Farmhouse Kitchen!

Ad-Free Blog

Hi, the calendar says it's SPRING, but here in Chicagoland and in our home, she is totally dragging her feet.

Spring isn't just for bunnies.

Christmas Pig (that's her name) is much like the infamous sow in the "Outlander" books by Diana Galbadon. So many piglets have been born this Spring. (The piglets are corn cob holders, fronts and back ends, LOL) ..they seem to move around in their little nest in my antique coffee grinder.

I was sick of Winter RED along with Winter, so I have switched almost everything to blue.
Normally I force some forsythia, but I think our bushes got badly nipped with
the early FREEZE we had last Fall, so I am using faux pansies on the table instead.

Momma Pig is pretty attentive...after years of being washed with a wet, kitchen cloth, she needs a new coat of paint, but her piglets are fresh and pink!

Locked in the house, I have slowly been doing some Spring cleaning---and I oiled the island counter. We do this on the butcher block island maybe four times in a year, because this surface gets more use than any of the others.

I found the vintage blue vase at a thrift store, and it is filled with faux Forsythia and some small Iris. Perfect for Spring. The potholder was stitched by my friend Dorothy and is perfect background for wooden spoons.

Normally I have a runner here, but with the fresh oil, I'm waiting a week or two for the oil to totally sink in.  The Danish enameled sauce server holds some very vintage beaded flowers. The crock is very old, and holds our napkins.

The sweet teapot and two stoneware mugs, were from my mom-in-law. The trivet is very old, pansies and probably German porcelain.

I calmed down the colors in our corner cabinet and brought in some birds. This cabinet is awaiting some Spring touches, when I can find them. (Next Post)

The platter in the middle is titled "Tulip Time", I added my last two tulip plates from Crate and Barrel, years ago, and my Grandmother's antique Dutch salt and pepper and a sweet Dutch Maid bell.

I cleaned the corner cabinet and did find the Spring banner. With shutdown, no one will be coming for Easter....sigh.

The plants are growing great. Transplanted most of the tomatoes.

The broccoli is going to the greenhouse today. We are maintaining 50 degrees out there, so it will be happier than the dry warm kitchen.

Like many Grandparents we miss our Grandgirl, our kids...and the family gatherings.
Thank goodness for the phone, photos, videos and the love
that pours from that normally annoying device!
I decorated the fridge from Spring items from last year, and an old SPRING photo!

    2. Thanks, Maristella....I just had to do some editing, and lighten up the cupboards, too. The corner cabinet was full of junk and craft supplies, I edited, and emptied a whole shelf for now full of serving trays, dishes, etc. Stay safe!!! hugs, back! Sandi

  3. Sandi, your kitchen looks very springified! Love those blue and white tulip plates and the little Dutch accompaniments. I know I should be using all this down time to get some straightening up done, but so far not yet. Sometimes I surprise myself of how lazy I am. I am contemplating putting any Easter out, but probably will..Stay well..xxoJudy

    1. Hi, Judy---I basically just cleaned. With the knee replacement last year, I missed my Fall deep clean, so everything was pretty gooey..LOl. I'm maybe putting out some green/tulips out, but that will be it. Not worth hauling it all up. I usually keep birds out in the livingroom, but the plants are still there. Take care, do what gives you Joy! Stay well, too! Sandi

  4. Hi Sandi.
What a lovely Spring gathering! I especially like Momma Pig and her wriggly little brood of pink piglets. I have a tendency to set up little tableaux like this around my house too, so it is right up my street!
Your seedlings look to be doing very well. I'm going to have a go at growing some courgettes from seed this year but don't have a greenhouse or a lot of know-how, so I might just look for a few sunny gaps in the garden and let them take their chances!
The separation from family and friends is challenging - we're just over two weeks in to working from home and social distacing here and it's already wearing thin - but glad you're staying well and busy around the house.
    Stay safe!
    Amelia
P.S. The vintage beaded flowers are very beautiful too!

    1. Oh, thanks for stopping by, Amelia. Good luck on your seeds, I had to look up what courgettes were and of course they were zucchini which are pretty easy to grow. Start 2 seeds in a large tall cup...(they are vigorous, indoors in a window. Make sure you have a drainage hole in the bottom. We will be starting ours maybe next week. The vine plants, squash, zucchini, pumpkins, gourds are all very vigorous, but are very sensitive to frost...so you just can't put them in the ground too early. If you plant outside plant in hills of dirt and don't be afraid to make them grow up a fence, string, or sticks! Good luck! Sandi

  5. Blue and white is so pretty for spring...and I especially love your little Dutch treasures! I put Skype on my phone this week, so I could visit with some of my kids and grandkids. Missing seeing family is definitely the hardest part of being home.

    1. I know that is the worst part about being home. We drove 45 min to drop off a bag of craft supplies for bunny tin cans...that I had ready for a visit. Waved and left---but it was great to see smiling faces, definitely worth the trip there and back! Thanks for stopping by, and I love my blue and white, and can't wait for my daffodils to start blooming!

  6. Hi Sandi! You left such a nice message for me! Thank you so much. I love your blues for spring. I wish I had a good window for starting seedlings like yours. Coming right along! We cherish home more than ever these days.

    1. Thanks so much, and I will move the last of the seedlings out into the greenhouse tomorrow. We are managing to keep the temp above 45 at night, so things are really perking up! Yes, home is precious---we do take a stir-crazy ride through a forest preserve each day, and it is amazing to see all the trimming and yards all cleaned up so early here in Chicagoland...then there are people simply sitting in the sun with big coats on...and waving at the gawkers on the road! Grins, stay safe! We were lucky enough to spend a week in Seattle, and the gardens and zoo were so gorgeous---and lush. I will look forward to photos!

  7. Enjoyed your blues in your kitchen; this year I took down my basket collection and crookedly (darn) put up a variety of blue and white plates which I am enjoying! I have collected a few Dutch boys and girls and will eventually display them on a shelf (still unpainted!) under one of my Monets that has a windmill and tulips. My bathroom is full of my Monets and my flamingo collection; it is quite a combo but makes me smile!

    1. Hmmm, what could be better than Monets and blue and white. I have the most marvelous entertaining book, called, Monet's Kitchen. So rich and pretty, full of blues and whites and warm golds of France. I have more pieces of delft, but they got packed in some Christmas tote--when I put up Christmas, and are misplaced right now. Sigh. I have to cull Christmas anyway, and will do that in late summer! Thanks for stopping by...flamingos and windmills...sounds like fun! Hugs, Sandi

  8. I Love Enamelware! It's one of the things I've had a harder time Purging because it's so difficult to come by the really Primo pieces. My Favs are my French Body Pitchers from Europe, which I couldn't afford to Buy now so I'm glad I got a Serious Collection before it became too expensive to buy one. A Hint of Spring is always Welcome, I've yet to really go all out Spring and I think now, by the time I got around to it, Summer will have rolled in!? *LOL* As you can see I'm catching up on Reading everyone's Blog Posts, it's been a Relaxing past time to read everyone's Posts while in Lock Down, more peeps are Blogging again!
