Antiquing....and I found my Marbles!

Ad-ree Blog

Hi, this is post is lots of fun and OLD stuff!

A few weeks ago, my friend and I went to a real antique mall, one of our favorites now in McHenry County, Illinois. Woodstock is the town from "Groundhog Day" with Bill Murray.

There has been an antique mall here as long as I can remember in the last 30 years or so. New owners have upgraded the building and the dealers. Excellent selections of everything from vintage to OLD, very OLD goodies. Lots of furniture, but of course it's the smalls and items we searched to fill out our own collections.

One of the first stops is the bathroom...lol, it's a ride aways from our home.

There, a large room is dedicated to Vintage---mostly 40s-70's. A great large area is filled with vintage clothes, poodle skirts, and petticoats. My friend has bought two dresses there. I always look at vintage jewelry because I wear clip earrings. Loving this old jewelry box in pristine condition.

Along with poodle skirts---every hometown soda bar had one of these for mixing malts. Hamilton Beach was a big employer in my home town of Racine, Wi. I dated a fellow whose Mom was the Home Economist for Hamilton Beach. While a great housekeeper, their home did have holes in the walls, for they had 3 sets of twins with one lone girl and four of the boys were wrestlers...hence the holes!

POODLEs---I keep an eye out for these at thrift stores, but it is fun to see them in PERFECT condition.

I loved the Haeger three-maids vase. Pierrot Clown figurines were quite the rage for several decades going back to the 20's.

oldnewgreenredo

Speaking of maids, I have a moratorium in picking up anymore tins,  enamelware, roasters in particular, none of them fit in my new oven, as well as stoneware anything and vases.

But, that doesn't keep me LOOOKING and enjoying!

oldnewgreenredo

This booth was extraordinary in the quality of their enamelware.
From the 1800-through the 1970's.Great pieces at fair prices for their condtion.

oldnewgreenredo

Wow...huh?

oldnewgreenredo

Item I do look for---an enamel funnel....yet to see one I can afford.

oldnewgreenredo

Look at the blue double boiler over to the left...
I have thirteen roasters...hence the moratorium. The  blue tub at the bottom would be great for babies!! Lovely oak child's chair.

oldnewgreenredo

I also have to think long and hard on kitchenwares...but BLUE----sigh!

Oldnewgreenredo

This rack of  yellow ware bowls are fab, and so is the pieces of McCoy...but I wanted that stand...LOL> NFS...not for sale!

oldnewgreenredo

Reminiscent of Torquay pottery these pieces are Haag Pottery. Lovely and a great lesson.

This mall has juke boxes, records, billiard tables, pinball games, cars, trains, to keep the guys entertained.
In the 1950's, tin toys were finally banned because of lead in all the paints. I remember this airplane and tower that cranked up and spun around in the air from my older cousin's. Awesome example.

oldnewgreenredo

We were actually looking for Halloween, but very  sparse. This booth was from the queen of Christmas. Gorgeous and pristine examples. Everything you might have had or seen for Christmas as a kid.
oldnewgreenredo

Look at all those original ornament boxes---FULL of 20's-50's ornaments. Everything your grandparents or great-grandparents might have had. She had more showcases and displays filled with holiday goodies.

oldnewgreenredo

Even with 20% off, I couldn't justify buying  this beautiful Mandeville seed display box. OMG, it was gorgeous and priced accordingly.  After over 2 hours of poring over all the displays and hundreds of dealers...I felt like I had lost the few marbles I have left.

oldnewgreenredo

But I even found those.....LOL.
What a fun day---and I only bought one item ---
this trip and stuck to my moratoriums!!!
If the Haeger vase is there next time---it's mine!

Back into the heat at the exit of the

  1. What an utterly fabulous place. I would have lost my marbles, too! That Haag pottery -- I'm not sure I could have left a piece of that behind. And all the Christmas. In awe!

    1. Thanks, yes the Christmas was really quite high--but the best I've seen..and I have so many categories I have to NO LONGER acquire any, or get rid of two to buy 1...that doesn't mean I can't really REALLY enjoy it all!

  2. Looks like such a fun place for antique lovers! Loved the title of your post - it made me laugh, but I'm glad to see that you "found" your marbles, after all!

    1. Yep...pretty much thought that as I posted the last photo---ha! I have 4 jars of vintage/antique marbles I'm too lazy to research and sell. Thanks for visiting and it was fun! I could visit a thousand times and take 20 photos each time---and still not scratch the surface.

  3. Wow, I wish there was a place like this around here...not that I'd be able to pass up some of those white and red enamel pieces. I have no willpower. Hahaha.

    1. Yes, that is the best I've seen. I really only do blue and white, except the pieces I use in the garden, but I'm out of cupboard and shelf space...so it has to be spectacular...LOL. Thanks, for visiting! Sandi

  6. Sandi, those are always the best kind of shops. There is usually something for everybody. I see a lot that has passed through my life in one way or another. I am disappointed that you didn't share what you got - coming later, maybe?..Happy Fall..xxoJudy

    1. Heehee...oh, well, we can't have EVERYTHING. I really am down-sizing slowly---and trying to get it reasonable. I know my kids won't want it...so I have to exercise some control. I only purchased a miniature brass coatrack, which I will share in a doll post! That's all...thanks, for stopping by! Sandi

  7. Woa, Sandi, I want to come along too! What a fab looking place, and all the better for the town appearing in Groundhog Day. I used to have a rather lovely red enamelware collection, but sold it all on eBay (silly me!). I think I need to build one up again. How kitsch are those pink poodles!? Lulu x

  8. What fun this was! We did go to our local antique mall once a month this past spring and summer until I decided I'd better wait until I get a booster vaccination in a few weeks. I miss it so much and enjoyed each picture here, zooming in to get details. You're right, just looking at pretty things is fun. I buy very little these years but I still can't resist books and linens, always room for them. I no longer buy Spode that I collected for over 50 years. I even gave some sets of Spode to family when we downsized. I no longer buy furniture, no room, unless it's something for the garden. No longer buy Christmas items, giving my own away each year and still boxes left. I would pause before those large planters on that rack that was NFS.

The Haeger vase is unique! Always room for a few more vases and this one would be pretty even empty. I am astounded at a mother of three sets of twins having time to be a professional home economist. She must have been amazing, even with holes in her walls!

    1. Hi, Dewena. The antique store is so big---you really don't have to be near anyone! I know, I'm totally not buying unless it is so cheap I can resell it. Oh, well, on the HomeEc -her way of managing was..if you left anything (ANYTHING) out and didn't put it away it went to 'no man's land'. My boyfriend showed up at High School in slippers in his Sr. Year...because he had left his gym bag and shoes out in the hall, which were in no man's for 3 days. Second offense with same item---a week. 3rd, it disappeared forever. She was a bit scary...lol. Thanks for visiting, and keep writing--it is good for the soul! We see lots of Haeger here, because the plant was roughly fifteen miles from here, but people know what it is, so the price doesn't reflect the availability...sigh!

  9. Hi Sandi - what an amazing shop! It seems like you got so much enjoyment out of browsing and reminiscing that you really didn't need to bring anything home (other than the photos, which take up no physical space!). I have quite a few categories of things where I have to apply the "one out one in" rule - books being the main culprits - and some where I'm only "allowed" to own one of each kind - mostly dolls, or bird ornaments in pottery, porcelain and glass! Yarn is still being squished in, in one or two skein increments only, but now I have the problem of owning too many hats, scarves and gloves...sigh!

    1. Oh, gosh---my rule is 1 in and 3 at least out..now...it's so bad. LOL..yes, yarn I gave away and no purchase unless a definite project, ha! Hats and scarves make great gifts...and so do animal sweaters---my BF's mom knits oodles of woolen goodies from NZealand for her critters. Hugs, and you made me laugh---I totally gave up magazines, and books are slowly being weaned...!
