Mather Class: Working with Sourced Papers and Enhancing.

I'm a history freak, so long ago, I saw this sheet of old Globe prints wrapping paper, I used one piece for a gift and then saved this piece deep in a pile of papers and magazines.

The prompt for class was to use a paper source, magazine photos, or artwork to create and ENHANCE into a composition. I thought this would be fun.

I didn't take photos as I was working...you know when you are in the groove, you forget about everything. I worked on black cardstock, and layered bits and pieces here and there.

After getting a rough composition, I began filling in areas and extending lines of the globes' edges. Ferns and palms added the perfect tones to accent the land areas. 

I used some alcohol based metallic markers that are excellent on dark papers. 

The print's shorelines are pretty accurate, but the inlands are empty and even blank. I left quite a bit of space around the nine or so pieces I glued onto the black paper. Then I began to think about dangers sailors/explorers had to face on their journey.

I wanted to tell a story.

Something about the entire pieces of globe and how small the 'Americas' were and also how incomplete. In the 1600's America was roughly known...mapping was still a limited art, and took many hours and miles across the sea to implement a map through triangulation.

Besides the idea of a round globe on flat paper...you had the 'Unknowne Land' or lands full of shores that had not been searched, and mountains never climbed. 

On the dark areas, I applied one/two layers of light blue tissue with modge-podge over, then with a wet second coat on top, I started to tear the tissue and move the gooey bits around, scratching and marking with handles  of brushes and a pin. What I created was a black hole, or the 'Unkowne' of a never ending seascape. The dark was enhanced with various markers and a white paint pen that I smeared to give the foam upon the sea...the blues and browns were sprayed and rubbed on alcohol inks. 

Working on surfaces  of dried Modge-podge is wonderful with inks. If you do too much you can easily remove most of it with an alcohol soaked tissue or q-tip. 

I don't really know how many layers I used of everything...just kept applying, removing, covering up, and adding again.

Materials for Collage

Black heavy card stock 8 1/2" x 11" 

Cuts from thin wrapping paper

Glue stick and Modge-podge

Permanent Black marking pen

pale blue tissue paper

Umber Alcohol ink

Turquoise Alcohol ink

Royal blue Alcohol ink

Red Sharpie marker (this was the only red that would be bright on top of all the materials).

Metallic permanent markers. 

White paint marker fine and brush ends.

Something ARTY made of bits and pieces!

Well, this week I actually got to catch up with a couple of my classes. Tuesday we did Mather Class with Flor...a paper cutting class with a floral theme.

We started with instructions history on an artist, and a really intricate handout with a pattern. I took one look at that, and knew I would never be able to handle that intricate of work, so I took it My Way.

I started with a piece of cardstock 12x12...using my painted junk sheets I made last summer I cut out a vase shape.

Quick Video of a bunch I did on the fly with watercolors, alcohol inks, sprays and watersoluable crayons. If you have (ugly) art work, chop them up into color groupings and save for collage)

Adding a bit of magazine papers (the greens) cut into Matisse style wobbly leaves, I made some yellow floral shapes in gold and yellow. The orangey piece was from Tumeric painting in another Mather class.

Cutting was easy, the little reddish petals were all petal shapes, and the blues were supposed to look like forget me knots.

Two and a half hours later I was still playing and gluing. Once I was content, I sprayed this outside with Krylon Workable fixative (to stabilize the water colors and keep them from bleeding).

Then an even coating of DecoArt super clear sealer in Matte. to tack down all the edges and make it totally water safe. I plan to do some enhancing down the way after this cures. You can work on tip of sealers...and I hope to add some depth and fill in some of the whites. Next time I do a paper cut pot and flowers I will have a painted background/table and something behind it. 

But, for play this was so much fun...especially when you can work large and bold!

Mather Creative Mindfulness: Birch Trees

What could be more Fall than a walk amongst Birch Trees.

We have family living in Sturgeon Bay, Door County in Wisconsin. Behind the house is a small forest with Birch trees and lots of limestone slabs...a walk is a bit treacherous, but so gorgeous when all the trees turn golden.

The class lesson was to make birch trees by dragging a card, or cardboard, or corrugated cardboard with paint across to make the black marks of birch trees. 

I have always wanted to try this, so I notched a little piece of flexible cardboard from some packaging. After making some loose stripes in light gray/brown watercolor washes for shadow sides of trunks. I then dragged black gouache with the cardboard and it made excellent birch trees with a flick of the wrist. 

Simple tools, cardboard, a few brushes, a wool sponge, gouache and watercolors.

I'm still trying to clean this last palette. I think I will make some more collage papers tomorrow and use up everything.

I can remember this poem, and Mr. Frost reading this in his sing-songy New England accent on televeision live when I was a child. It has always been a favorite.

Paper Art Explorations from Mather

Hi Everyone, I hope you are enjoying our lovely Fall. 

Here in Illinois it was in the 90's yesterday..even in NE Illinois. However we get daily reports of all the birds migrating overhead. We are on a direct flyway from Horicon Marsh in Wisconsin, and we had a huge flock of Canadian Geese overhead a few days ago.

My Mather Paper Explorations class this month was about a Birds' Journey. I worked on a collage over a watercolor 'play' piece which I had set aside to dry a few days back on multi-media paper.

This prompt was Birds in Flight and I thought this would be a great background for the 45 min class theme.

Watercolor washes and loads of paper I had made previously. The birds are cut in multiples from cardstock. All the prints/papers were ripped. I find that action so soothing and also energetic...how can that be both???

I use gluesticks to attach all my torn pieces, ...and then planned to seal the whole thing. Since everything is in watercolors I sprayed it first with workable fixative to secure the watercolors.

I titled this "Racing the Storm".  Many species of Birds have to travel thousands of miles instinctively to reach Winter quarters. Our feeders are very busy this time of year, this week we had a Pileated Woodpecker juvenile in the trees here for a few days and now he is gone.

Is this a great work of art...NAH...but it was fun, timely and a gentle reminder we are all on a Journey of sorts! 

Again, working with a time limit really helps and I'm learning to quit...instead of over ponder and mess it up.
