It's Still Fall in our HOME!

We didn't decorate much for Halloween this year. I started Fall in early October because of having surgery in the middle of the month. I didn't want to have a huge change to make.

I pulled this thrifted tray out to set this vignette on my counter. Basically all I use this counter for is to unload the dishwasher. I'm blessed with tons of counter space and a large island where all the prep and cooking goes on.

I'm still dealing with plants that haven't found their homes yet from outside. The long enameled pot is a French Fish Poacher. The pumpkins and gourds are a mixture of Faux and real, can you tell which is which...lol.  A blue jar filled with dried Dill and a stack of heavy stoneware plates,  and a Fall towel hide the empty banana rack. Gourds dried or Faux.

Our everyday dishes are in this cabinet. I still have to rearrange the top shelf when I am comfortable on a ladder. And I have to wait until Hubby is home.

The cabinet is a bit messy, but this is what works for us. This photo tells me this cabinet needs some attention. Many of the dishes are thrifted and I see my Tulip plates (center back) are still up from Spring. Hmmmm? 
Normally I add a few color pieces for seasons...I still haven't found my Fall ceramics tote???

Our little white buffet is covered in a thrift store woven tablecloth. It has a 70" round  Hearth and Home tag, and still had folds in it from the original packaging. A steal at $2.00. I gravitate towards plaids for the Fall and winter holidays.

The long squash is one of 6 we grew, very delicious---was some sort of Illinois variety that my friend gave me seeds for. 

The white pot holds a lemon grass plant from outside. We will see if it sprouts again or not. It was so dry outside for 8weeks and now we have had 3 days of rain.

This is quite a mess, as I have a large pot of Rosemary, a Hummingbird plant. 
On the far end is my curly willow plant from the pond. The frogs disappeared soon after I removed this, I think they liked hiding under there.

Pigs and mushrooms and gourds, and even a gnome are here and there. Way too much, but it will change a lot as  I get more organinzed. These plants take up so much space and the kitchen has the best light.

Fall is sparse here, but i mixed our German flasks with a Danish brass (drinkers) plate (the noses are rubbed off from so much polishing), my Grandmother's Friar Tuck Cookie Jar, and one lonely pumpkin. LOL. A few bits of fall toned dishes and pots.

Here's the main kitchen problem...Herbs and all my Mandilla plants that are still blooming like crazy.  I set up a temporary plant stand to give them all the light they demand.

This kitchen window is a southern exposure and gets the best light in the home for plants.

With the rain the third day...I actually turned on the lights above the windows. They are woven in a Eucalyptus vine and I haven't needed to use it. But, with daylights savings done and the rain, it's been so dark in the afternoon the warm lights are welcoming.
My dining table has a Walmart plastic table cloth on right now..I have lots of messy projects to do...and this is perfect for right now. 75% off, so $2.00, and I love that their seasonal cloths are wide enough for my large table.

Our large Enamel platter holds one of our garden pumpkins and some squash the rest is Faux. I elevated the pumpkin on a bean pot.

The other side has faux cabbage, a real pinecone, and faux Tomato, mixed with gourds, real dried and faux
On the back end is my favorite Fall candle.

WELL, that is unplanned Fall in our home...a bit of this and that from one tub of Fall stuff. It's taken me 6 weeks to get this far...I can't even imagine doing Christmas.
I'm not sure we are even doing Thanksgiving.

Fall Touches in our Vintage Kitchen

Fall Touches...I looked around the kitchen this morning and it was clean for a change. Yesterday I scampered about the yard, battening down the hatches because of a wind/storm threat and snapped off a bunch of flowers just in case they got wiped out.



A little of this and that, as I've said before our summer was so hot and the flowers were stunted and now are exploding everywhere, just in time for the frost.

The arrangement echos all the colors in my fruit thrift store tablecloth. Nice and wide and long for our large table and only $2.99 never washed tag still on it. 

Behind the table in the corner is the hutch. I only added my few hydrangea blossoms to dry. I haven't located any major fall decor---as our basement is still in plumbing alteration mode. ---meaning I can't find anything.

My container is an old porcelain tea canister I found this summer. It has transfers on all four sides...and in my favorite blue and white.

Add a stuffed pumpkin and my mom's antique coffee grinder.

My cookbook counter has a coordinating??? tablecloth in soft fall tones. We had a frost warning last weekend, so I brought in the plants I winter in the house over the weekend.

My Rex begonia I thought was dead---but revived in the cooler days. It also has an annual impatiens and a grass. We will see what makes it.

We love naturals, and here are some gourds and mini pumpkins. Some from my plants fostered and a few E planted in her backyard. Funny my gourd plants did nothing here and she had tons of gourds---all different kinds.

Another thrift store find...this sweet kitty pumpkin...her ears are scraped a bit, and Im tossed between painting them or scraping them some more...

The Mandilla is on the end in full bloom---and twining away...Happiness is Homemade sign---only new thing I purchased for Fall---at 70% off. Honestly the seasons are so rushed in the stores now...it's crazy. Life is flying by enough, already.

We had many a gathering here with family this year. We are having Thanksgiving this year, but not much else.

I love sunflowers...and pulled out a faux bush, now that they are done in the yard.

Normally if I serve buffet style off the island. I can't remember what it was like when this kitchen didn't have the island. It functions so well...and this little end I always have something going on! Right now it is 'harvest' for sure. Antique pickling crock, enamel coffee pot, grandmother's crocks, more gourds and peppers that are to go to our neighbor---we had SO many this year.

The sink is seldom empty, and here is the basil I need to process for the refrigerator and freezer. I need to buy garlic, olive oil and pine nuts to make pesto, this afternoon.
I still have to dry a huge crop of Sage and Majoram. Also, bring in the Thyme and Parsley plants.

The busiest place in the kitchen is our coffee station....pumpkin spice is always nice!


Staples, actually some need filling...

The workaholic in the kitchen the toaster/convection oven. Use this constantly for two people...it's perfect. Plus throws off less heat in the summer. Now we turn the stove oven on for dinner and taking the chill off.

I haven't done anything above the stove, yet. I still have some heirlooms that are inaccessible at the moment planned for this shelf! 
Almost everything is inherited or thrifted in our home.
 I love the hunt and let's face it, old stuff was made to last!

Last bit of clean counter---more staples...in our family antique blue jars. My mom-in-law's Kitchen Aide. Love it, except it is so HEAVY! My old mixer went to my kids.

Our home is full of antiques (enameled fish poacher makes a great space saver planter)...or 'old' stuff. 


I named my blog, "Old,New,Green,Redo",but I should have followed my mom's favorite saying.

We are children of parents brought up during the Depression. They were young adults during wartime; facing stress, shortages and pitching in for the good of all. 

Their generation knew how to stretch a dollar. 
My mom would say,"Use it up, wear it out, make it do, or do without." I heard this so many times during my young life, it actually 'sings' a little ditty in my head.

I remember material for my first prom dress was bought from grocery savings. We had a lot of casseroles made from chicken necks and half a pound of hamburger. 

I seldom buy anything new and often replace broken or chipped anything by buying the same thing at a thrift store. Why? Mostly because household items made 50 years ago...don't wear out! You seriously have to break something to throw it away! Thrift stores aren't just thrifty, we are saving the planet by reusing items, instead of clogging landfills. A GREEN thing to do. I'm sure Corning Ware would still be solid tossed in a landfill in a 1000 years...buried in tons of garbage. 

Yes, that is 1968 Corning Ware, from the time of our wedding.

I utilize many OLD items for storage or display. Not just because they are vintage or antique, but because they are practical. Years ago, when my mom-in-law called me and asked, "Do you want the  stash of Blue Mason jars?",  she had always used for canning. I SAID YES!!!

I keep staples in LARGE blue Mason jars with rubbers and zinc lids. A 1/2 gallon jar holds a large box/bag of pasta. Quarts hold beans, rice, peas! I use them in the refrigerator for nuts, buttermilk mix, flax seed.  Smaller pint jars are great for herbs, sugar cubes, marshmallows, lentils, baking soda, and smaller beans/peas.
I have labels on the back side, when the jar is empty--I easily add it to my grocery list.

My grandmother's pickling crock is used for pickles in Fall and hides goodies the rest of the time.

After going through and breaking two sets of everyday dishes in our early married life forty-some years ago. I began to just collect dishes in anything blue and white. Mix and match...this and that. 



I do have red Wachtersbach luncheon plates I found for 99 cents each for Fall and Winter to liven up my table.

I love these egg cups (my mom's)...1950's Blue Willow...and we use them.

This morning I'm making Pumpkin Oatmeal-raisin-pecan Muffins with roasted pumpkin from our freezer. My granny's coffee pot makes a great vase. The tablecloth is all cotton, reversible, 
bleach-able and vintage.

Our fourth-generation family wicker fills our screened in porch. Cushions were recovered with vintage (spotted) tablecloths (I cut around the spots)---homemade piping was made for all of one fabric, backs were made from a Waverly 
discontinued fabric found cheap.
Our sofas in the living room are almost thirty years old...and really need to be replaced. But uncertain times means, we will wait---and we will make it do.

A vintage cotton tablecloth ($6) was perfect for the settee on the porch.  Only things new here--are the wastebasket, and magazine holder---handmade by myself and my dad. The pillows are covered in ticking or plaid towels. The rocker cushions are from  from tablecloths.

I've always redone and made do with used furniture. Here I took a $5 table and used it in my shop for ten years. When I brought it home, we reinforced it with a nice deep shelf.

I love that it is really long and I painted it a neutral tone to match some chairs we had. It's in our nautical/fishing themed family room. The Grand girl gets to play with the doll house (1950's)  
on top when she visits.

I use a piece of vinyl upholstery on the table top---so she can play hard and she does because the animals living in the house are very busy and raucous!

Our pillows were all made from souvenir dishtowels of my grandparents and gifts. The sectional is in dark denim...and we love it, and it takes a real beating!

An end table in the family room is the 1919 trunk my grandmother packed her belongings in when she came to America. I'm sure she had to do without, if everything she owned was in there.

We have a vegetable garden and can or freeze all our produce.

Corn relish is a favorite, made from a windfall of sweet corn from my sister-in-law last fall.

We eat healthy, fresh and from scratch most of the time.

Pickle relish was another large batch this year, we did as a family. And it is so much better than the glow-in-the dark green relish here in Chicago...what do they use to make it florescent???

Nothing is better than homemade, like spaghetti, or lasagna with home canned tomatoes and zucchini. 

I have no idea how old that funnel is. The old one fits much better than the new plastic ones...! We can so much stuff, we needed two for keeping up filling jars.

Remember when the weather was the worst thing we complained about?

We've planted more indoor seed starts for the garden. It's still very cold here in Chicagoland. I've seen snow flurries and white stuff 4 times last week, so everything still has to be in the house.

Our new greenhouse gets nice and warm during the day, but nights have been below freezing. The above photo is from May, last year. I hope we don't have to wait that long for everything to go into the greenhouse this year. Our tomatoes, peppers and broccoli need to be transplanted now to big cups. (Notice the reuse of beverage containers) All the shelving was reused from the old greenhouse as was much of the wood framing as well as the metal framing from the failed greenhouse.

We started 24 pots of Caladiums and 5 huge Elephant Ears, as well as Coleus shown above.We have lots of shade in the yard, and hubby went a bit extravagant in purchasing some bulbs. 
But, I will use them for gifts for friends this summer. 
IF we ever get to visit anyone again.

In talking with friends many are housecleaning, 
projecting, crafting, and organizing in our uncertain time.
