Cookie Day 2023 and my two antique Recipes!

AD-FREE BLOG

Cookie Day was yesterday(Sunday), and flour was flying, laughter was ringing, and carols were humming in the background. We were only six this year...but maybe more fun than having 13 or so...LOL. And we made proportionally less cookies, which helped.

oldnewgreenredo

If I look tired, it wasn't
because I did all these cookies alone.

Our stash of cutters got a work out -----
these are the newer Christmas ones...My husband is THE cookie cutter hoarder!

oldnewgreenredo

I set up everything in the middle of our huge kitchen table. Sprinkles are put on the Lazy-Susan.

This is the last year I will buy pre-packaged cookie icing. I will invest in more tips and bags and mix the icing myself with powder sugar. cream of tartar, and vanilla. Sure works better than the prepackaged icing, tastes better too.

oldnewgreenredo

We went basic with the gingerbread this year and just white homemade icing, which sets up quickly.

Cooling racks are a must when you are making tons of cookies. The guys rolled out, and the gals decorated.
I've used this recipe for 50 years or so.

I was so happy to find Brer Rabbit molasses this year, that has such a super taste.

oldnewgreenredo

These are my hubby's THICK Cookies---it's his grandmother's recipe so very OLD. We had the fifth generation making her cookies, yesterday! The recipe is probably older than that, too.

oldnewgreenredo

Really cute decorating the girls did, we all cut back on icing---lol, I know you can't tell.

Alvina's OLD RECIPE for Form Cookies.
I use unbleached flour and have substituted Crisco for half the lard...but the consistency changes. Upside these are delicious, hold well, and  are perfect for decorating or just sprinkling sugar on.

You can leave out the egg white and the icing is fine and dries nicely with just water
added with the cream of tartar.

What's left to do this week---Klejner, Finksbro, Vaniller Kranse, Pound Cake, Pumpkin bread baked into gingerbread house forms-for gifts,  Peppernuts...and chocolate crinkles and coconut wreaths...I better get cracking, no elves to help with these!

Family Cookie Day 2019

Ad-free Blog

This was 2019...and what I miss the most this year!

I had to do these the day after, so this is only about 1/2 the cookies. Last Saturday, I set up our huge kitchen table with 3 leaves and 9 chairs...(we were 12 cookie baker/decorators) this year. The guys handled the rolling out and baking with help from or kid crew.

oldnewgreenredo

The table was set with two big carousels of gathered/donated decorations/sprinkles/icing and some bowls for distributing, paper plates for decorating on. Paper toweling is a must---!

I make up a batch of icing in white, blue, yellow, red, green that gets hard for spreading, and then we use the commercial cookie icings for outlining, which honestly were fabulous and easy for little hands to work with.

oldnewgreenredo

We used a (12 cup flour batch) of sugar cookie dough and (6 cup flour) gingerbread batch(those you bake really thin.) The sugar cookie recipe is from my husband's grandmother, the gingerbread is from an old Scandinavian cookbook. This makes more than enough cookies for five families.

oldnewgreenredo

Everyone had their own style in decorating---some love lots of frosting and sugar,

oldnewgreenredo

others, just do outlines---the biggest hit were random eyeballs on everything...LOL. Orange was a new addition for snowman noses, but became foxes, mushrooms, duck, chicken, and bird feet.

oldnewgreenredo

The cookies have to set up for a couple of hours before they can be packed away.

oldnewgreenredo

New cookie cutters this year were a Unicorn which was very popular with the kid set,
and a 3 pc train---which no one could figure out what they were.---!
RECIPE: Very Old (5 generations) and excellent.

THE most important part, gathering our family and friends together for FUN and MEMORIES even though no photos.

How are your memories coming for these holidays?

This post was originally done for last year....Trying to pull this off this year with the knee issues...but the crew will be here on Saturday and ...we know we will make tons of NEW cookies!

Cookie Day at our House.

This is an annual event, we make up dough and family and friends roll, cut and bake them at our house. Then, ages 5-70, we decorate until we drop. Some are left un-iced for those who don't like icing.

Some wine is consumed, and we have a potluck of sorts. Fun Day!

I make up two huge batches of dough (12 cups of flour) of my husband's great grandmother's recipe.
It has buttermilk in it and lard....so they are very tender.

Here are the cookies drying out. The dough was just too soft this year, so I aged them.

Even the the non-artist types got into it. Love this moose---with the white stockings.

We also had a batch of gingerbread, these are the real hard/crispy ones.
A few pans burned a bit...always happens.

So I made dog treats, 1/3 (1 cup about) broken/crisp cookies - 2/3 (2 cups) long-cook whole grain oatmeal, about 1/2 cup of baked pumpkin and equal amount of peanut butter to make a soft mixture. Roll into balls, dry for a few hours, and then freeze.
These are great treats for older dogs as they are softer.

Thanks always for visiting.
