DIY Barbie Vintage Boutique

Hi, I'm Vickie and I'm guest hosting this week on OLD NEW GREEN REDO for Sandi.

I love OLD vintage clothes and have always wanted to open a Vintage Clothing Shop. 

I found just the right space to remodel and REDO fixtures to make VICKIE'S VINTAGE 

a dream come true.

The DIY space is large and airy---perfect for a boutique diorama.  I hope I will be able to fill the huge space with all my vintage Barbie finds.

The back wall is 15" x 30" and the side wall is 15" x 22". I made a half-wall on the left side---so there is plenty of room for big people shoppers to move all the 1:6 scale Barbie friends around to shop.

 Ryan helped me wallpaper the walls in pink wrapping paper ($1.50 roll from Michael's bargain bins.) We used double-faced tape, so I can change my decor at whim. I generously turned the paper to the back side and packing taped it there also. The thinner foam core side walls are taped with packing tape, so they are foldable.

For the floor we used thick foam core ($6.99 40% off coupon so $4.20 at Michael's) covered in silver poster board (99cents a sheet--HL). We used two sheets of poster paper and have a lot left over. 

Luckily regular duct tape matched the silver and gave the floor edge a nice finish. 

The walls are thinner foam core and are dress-maker pinned to the floor from the outside in. Pushing long pins in on angles, helps to keep it secure. If you have really young ones shopping you could tape it all. But, pinned, we can still pick the whole thing up, move it, or fold it up for storage.

Here are my OLD fixtures, from here and there. The chairs I had from home. Left to right, the Monster High cabinet was 99 cents. The three black small fixtures are candle holders (99 cents each)

The clothing rack was some sort of office thing---for $1.00.

 The jewelry fixture was $1.99. These were all purchased at the local GoodWill.

The cabinet was in great condition but had no back. I ordered this online. 

I plan to use silver mounting board for the back and shelves.

This cute earring rack ($1.99) will make a great accessories display.

The three candle holders can be used for displays or maybe a seating with cushions. So hard to tell what to do until it's all put together.

One of my furniture bargains was bought online, for too much---($22.00) but I knew I really needed one statement piece for the shop. You know everything is old/vintage/ but needs to be classy too. 

I plan to use this for swimsuits, and lingerie, maybe accessories.

Any way, I will silver the inside of the doors and the back with silver papers, I already had. We hope to stick to a budget of $40.00 for the physical store and fixtures. I spent 22.00 on the cabinet, and impulse purchase. Maybe I should have chosen differently? Sigh, it's too late now.

We finished the outside of the service wall with more silver poster board (99cents a sheet). My last minute sticker signs aren't sticking...and we are opening today!!!!EEEEK!

The Monster High REDO looks great backed with the silver  and on the shelves too. No one will even notice the 'skull' theme in the plastic. Eventually this will be a perfume and cosmetics display. For the opening it will be used for hair accessories, glasses and hats...

This is amazing how well the office rack works for hanging clothes. We had to do nothing to this.

Just the right height even for formals.

I had no luck finding a check-out counter so we decided to build a NEW one from two Christmas card boxes that had clear plastic tops. Lots of tape---cutting and covering with contact paper. Hardest part was to figure out how to make it work. The box was just the right counter height.

I need storage for bags, and jewelry displays. And I have some vintage electronics I want locked up.

Wow, I think this will work. 

Now to cover it all in silver liner and black contact paper. Let's hope this works.

Here's the front with the silver and the cardboard covered in black.

A REDO from basically nothing. No cost, as I had the papers in my scrapbooking stash 

and the contact paper is from a huge roll of chalkboard paper.

 We used the plastic box covers for the shelves.

It looks just like glass. Now to stock everything, in a hurry.

On the back to the side is bag storage behind a door. 

I found pink bags and large white foldable box/bags at Michael's, for $2.49 and $2.99. 

Hopefully, I can get some made from scratch--when there isn't so much to do.

Luckily the DIY plastic/glass cabinet still slides out. I'm so glad we didn't tape up that side. 

Notice the OLD vintage record player and boom box...and those huge ear-muff speakers. 

Wow, OLD electronics have sure changed in the last 20 years.

The NEW counter top is scrap book paper in this great marble pattern with three coats of Mod Podge.

We really needed sturdy shelving for tippy, tiny shoes. Barbie's have so many different sized feet, so this is what we came up with. Only $1.00 an OLD wood silverware box, I painted with white enamel.

This is a great REDO, just paint. I didn't even cover up the handles.

I may have to put more shelves in this later, but for now---for the Grand Opening, it will work.

It didn't take long to fill the shoe shelf up---Golly! See the great vintage-wheeled suitcase...love it!

Now, to get all the clothes and fixtures up and ready for Grand Opening.

The Barbies Furnish the Mansion: Wallpaper and Floors

Hi, I've been busy in the Barbie Mansion REDO. We had two weeks, where the Grand wasn't here, so I took the opportunity to do some work on the house.

I started on the third level bedroom, where the boys have been banished too. The Pink graphics were not exactly gender friendly. The third level does have the deck where the boys can hang out.

Here the guys and chill, and munch popcorn on some vintage/used chairs. 

This gives them a little-girl-free place to hide.

I made a wardrobe out of a photo box. The blue stripes were perfect. Space up here, is pretty tight.

We are adding a  double-bunkbed for the 4 guy dolls.

I wallpapered the bottom in a denim scrapbook paper and the top with a very small shirt stripe. The 

football and sports motifs are stickers. Most stickers are perfect size for fashion doll scale of 1:6.

I still have to hand paint the windows.

 the heck out of the entire pink-magenta house.

Choosing a ivory satin spray paint for plastic, 

I masked the appliances off, but painted everything else.

The goal here was to get rid of the magenta ceiling-the windows were sprayed as a 

base coat for when I decide what color the trim will be. Covering the Barbie pinks and magentas require several coats of anything.

I chose another scrapbook paper for the wallpaper REDO. The contemporary circles, were a nice modern scale, with pinks, blues, greens, tans and white. Perfect to make the two houses blend, and something a real person might use in a real kitchen. My goal here is realistic play.

Here was my secret for applying the wallpaper. Dormtack a product that is basically a lightweight sticky on one side tape, that is removable. I found this at Michael's, and it promised to stick to anything, and still be able to be removed.

I cut the tape down the center to make it thinner, because I was just trying to hold up paper. The secret is to twist the gooey side out into long pieces of stickum. Here you can see it applied to a piece cut for the window edge. Unlike gum stickums this laid very flat when it was applied.

Here I have outlined the pieces with the rolled tape. I basically 'traced' the window shapes with a finger nail in the ridge of the plastic, then trimmed with a scissors.

Pressed down the tape was light enough in weight to disappear, but super strong to hold to the painted walls. It worked very well on the existing graphics on the third floor which had a shiny finish.

I just have to go back and do the windows, white, I think, and hang some white cupboards on the walls with velcro. I used the white tape at the top to make up the difference in the length of the wallpaper, it looks like clapboard or molding and again will be removable.

Then there was the HOT PINK, UGH!--floor. Too much pink for me. Since, I see this house everyday, some pink had to go. I sprayed the textured floor with the ivory spray paint. Because of the texture of the floor, it was matte looking except in the Barbie squares, which stayed shiny?

Trying to unify the two houses, I planned to use the same sticky shelf liner in white squares 'grouted' in pink. You have to have some pink.  Well, I started at the back, working forward. I knew I only had enough paper for one shot. The trim around the elevator will be hand painted white, as will the pillars.

It sorta worked. But, the textured painted surface of the tile paper really only stuck in some places--the shiny parts and itself. The tile design blends nice into the dining room, but I'm hoping it will work well enough once all the little doll feet walk on it, (or contact spray). I can always peel from the back and use removable contact spray?

So the townhouse side is pretty much done except to describe

The second floor REDO is on the Victorian Mansion side. Here you can see the second floor is quite shallow compared to the first. The goal is to extend the second floor to the left to the end of the green floor,  and forward the entire floor forward approximately 3" to match the green sticking out on the far right. This will almost double the square footage on the second floor in Barbie scale, 1:6.

The Victorian house REDO: the peach will probably have to go. But first is the issue of the built-in vanity/tub, where the closet will go when the new floor is installed. Who, wouldn't want a walk-in dressing room--especially six Barbie's with LOTS of wardrobe.

Problem: Here's the built-in tub/sinkvanity. The vanity tips forward and a pink tub appears. This has fittings molded into the wall with canister to the left and a pipe thing behind on the right.

Well this isn't pretty, but I hacked at this with a Dremel tool circular saw and managed to get the tub out whole. Eventually I smoothed it out. I saved the tub to be used as a hot-tub in the  house 'yard'. Very cute graphics on this wall, I will paper over the lower part with some coordinating paper to go with the bathroom and the bedroom. 

So on to the second floor next week, the closet, and the bedroom, if the weather warms up like they promise and I can do some spray painting.
