Getting Our Spooky on the Buffet

 Ad-Free Blog

I dragged one tote of Halloween upstairs for some decor accents at the beginning of October.  I haven't purchased anything new here, but I loved using some of our  old goodies.

oldnewgreenredo

I don't have a shot of the whole buffet because I have two huge plants residing in front of it, so excuse the angles of these photos.
The Mirror in the back was in my Grandmother's Attic. We trimmed it just a bit to fit under our existing cabinet.

Left, very Old Silverplate pitcher with dead roses. Morticia would be proud.
Next an old (30 years maybe) ceramic pumpkin light I made, the Cat is a wonderful gourd creation by an artist, then a real pumpkin from the garden. Fabrics are scraps of spiderweb fabric used in my shop from early 2000's.

oldnewgreenredo

Black sitting cat is an artist piece, a gift from a friend, thrifted skull that winks with one eye that lights up...
I also have some little pumpkin canning jar lights, that just aren't showing up unless the room is dark.

oldnewgreenredo

Helena Bonham Carter doll in a Steam Punk outfit from an Ever After doll. She has her ex-boyfriend with her. The corner Pumpkin stack came from a thrift store and the pumpkin sign also.
A Danish chrome bowl is filled with Fall potpourri.

oldnewgreenredo

Helena is known for her quirky parts in movies and was/is also connected with Tim Burton...well, the story is her Ex, Fred, was being difficult, so she turned him into a Frog...and he has to eat bugs for the rest of his leashed life...

oldnewgreenredo

Helena is also channeling her character in Enola Holmes...as a steampunk suffragette Mother to Enola...equally talented in Ju-Jitsu and making bombs. Can't wait for the 3rd season. The spider seems to be glow in the dark,

Are you sharing your Halloween?

oldnewgreenredo

Poor Fred...I do love the ruffled collar and his chalice of snacks.! He really doesn't eat much.

Last of OUR Midwest Gardening 2025

Ad-Free Blog

On Wednesday this week, I rescued all our houseplants and our 4 blooming Mandila from outside and brought them in. Our home is a bit of a mix-up with a visiting Dog and a Cockatiel in a LARGE cage. So now, I have plants everywhere, and nowhere to put them.

oldnewgreenredo

My Ivy Tree loved it outside this year with so much rain, sunshine and heat...I think it is thicker than ever. Eventually it will land in the bedroom. I used a organic bug spray on all my plants and tied them up inside plastic bags for a half-day before bringing them in...hopefully I brought in just plants and no bugs.

oldnewgreenredo

Our crazy weather year, so many plants were late...the too hot June and July was great for growth, but no flowering.  Too much rain kept vegetable blossoms from being pollinated. My Impatiens look the best right now...and the Mandilla only began blooming in September...yep, a crazy year.

oldnewgreenredo

I don't know the name of this plant but it tripled in size. It's from my Dad from 2012 and has just been existing and now it's super big. I have a little Halloween here and there.

oldnewgreenred

I did an OctoberFest Fall with Fall colors, tankards and steins, my beer truck carving, earthy pottery pieces mixed with some blue and white. I love the Sunflower stitchery from my good friend, Dot. It's a favorite and moves around the house quite a bit. The sunflower bowl I bought at a thrift store to make a garden stake...well, next year.

oldnewgreenredo

I didn't do many garden posts because the garden was such a disappointment. Despite generous rain, the heat actually shut many plants down.

I still have green tomatoes now, because we had none in July. We did have quite a bit of squash, and some pumpkins and smaller squash. I have a basket on the table filled with garden produce. I had a huge Zucchini, which must have pollinated with a pumpkin...and now it's orange? I'll show it when I open it to find out if it's a Zucchini or a Pumpkin???? Love surprises!

The neighbors' Chestnut tree had mature leaves this year, and they are just gorgeous copper and rust. I brought a few in to dry and use in decorating

oldnewgreenredo

I'm not sure what I will do with them yet, I'll tuck a few in the basket. I spent a hour in the garden picking the last of the produce. The two sunflower heads were on stalks 12 feet tall....and the stalks were too big for my clipper.

oldnewgreenredo

They are still quite moist. I want to harvest some seeds, and the birds/squirrels and raccoons have already had their way with them. Another blossom was ripped to shreds and dragged to the ground. These two (10-11" across) were looped over a beam across the garden. When I unhooked them they crashed down across the 10 foot high miniature corn...LOL.

oldnewgreenredo

This is our miniature corn, 6-8" cobs of multicolored corn. We had excellent pollination and the ears are full except for a couple of the tips. There are still more on the stalks, (some stalks had 2-3 cobs), for later but they are still very green. Goodness it's the 3rd week of October.

oldnewgreenredo

I cut my basil and dumped it in a jar of water, and a bowl of tomatoes to ripen,

oldnewgreenredo

Also a half a colander of small ripe peppers, seeds from flowers that are drying. I have more Zinnias blooming now than in August??? I have huge green Balsam plants that haven't bloomed yet?

oldnewgreenredo

Thats a 10" pie plate so those are small tomatoes, and the long squash is the last one and they are delish...I believe some sort of Delicata...I got the seeds from my friend.

oldnewgreenredo

A few green beans for a treat for the dog, some cherry tomatoes, and a few mini broccoli...honestly a bunch of mini vegetables, Barbie scale, lol.

oldnewgreenredo

Another garden pumpkin...and some Avocado seeds trying to start. My Begonia is coming back after being drowned and boiled in July, it was down to one leaf, but is finally coming back in the house.

oldnewgreenredo

A bit of Fall, and some mini plants I'm babysitting for my friend.

oldnewgreenredo

It's really Fall, finally. We expect a frost on Saturday. Hopefully we can get most things taken in or mulched. My Dahlias are monster green things and really blooming now...and they will all be wiped out.
The Dahlia bulbs should be huge when I dig them all up.

Other Fall jobs, clean the garden, empty all the pots, greenhouse, take in the hoses and all the leaves which haven't turned or dropped yet...maybe when it snows, LOL.

Just 2025....A WEIRD YEAR!!!

Garden Popping with Produce, Blanche and Freezing Veggies!

Ad-Free Blog

Hi, All...well you are probably sick of my painting, but the other half of my life is gardening. Honestly, we have had a ton of rain here, so you have to run out and do something whenever it is not pouring.

But, HOT...our humidity actually has been in the 90%, the bugs love it, I don't.

oldnewgreenredo

We've had two meals of Beans, the Broccoli is starting- 4 nice heads this week. The first heads are always the best

oldnewgreenredo

Yellow summer squash are starting. Lots of blossoms, but with the rain the blossoms have limped up and fallen off before polination.  I have flowers here and there to encourage flowering, and the sunflowers are everywhere.

oldnewgreenredo

We've had one small Zucchini, and a small Cucumber is waiting for salad tonight.

oldnewgreenredo

The Snow Peas are done, I'm leaving them to dry for seed. And, I will replant in August. We can always pop them in the greenhouse if it ever turns COLD.

Meanwhile we have had multiple meals, and now a bag that needs to be frozen.

Monday is clean the fridge day...hubby and I both shop when we are out and we both bought a bag of those small peppers that keep so well and are sweet and tasty.  So, long as I'm going to clean the fridge, I decided to blanch and freeze all our miscellaneous produce and some of the fresh from the garden.

A simple HOW TO:

BLANCHING AND FREEZING VEGETABLES

Equipment:

Knives, cutting board, compost container, large covered pot, Sieves or colander, medium metal bowl for icing, drainboard, pot holders, draining or straining spoon, timer, freezer bags, hot pad holders.

oldnewgreenredo

Today I'm using my 1968 REVERE WARE WORKHORSE Dutch Oven.

Specs online say this is 6 quarts, which is perfect for small batches of veggie blanching. This is the last of my Revere ware pots and pans from our wedding to survive all these years, it's from when they were still well made. I like using it because the lid rattles when it comes to a boil.

oldnewgreenredo

The first veggie I did, was cleaned and de-stringed Snow Peapods. This was the last picking and there are a few mature peas in here, but they are still so tender.
I  blanched them in boiling water for maybe 2 minutes, and then tossed into ice water until chilled. Scoop them onto the drain board and on to the next Veggies.

oldnewgreenredo

I did roughly three cups of beans....very young and tender, these were blanched in the same kettle of water for 3 minutes and then sieve drained and tossed into fresh cold water and ice...completely chill and drain.

oldnewgreenredo

The time in-between was just enough to prep the next veggie and let the water recover to boiling. I use a metal bowl because of the ability to chill fast and is also heat tolerant.

oldnewgreenredo

My last batch for this kettle of water were three medium (@ 4-5") heads of fresh Broccoli, loosely chopped.
All were blanched for maybe 4-5 minutes.
oldnewgreenredo

(or until the boil returned) and then chilled in ice water and put on the drainboard. Here, I dumped them in the hot water.

oldnewgreenredo

After blanching and in the ice water, the Broccoli is still crunchy, but remember you are going to cook it one more time, so less time is better. Broccoli will break down if you pre-cook for too long, so I just cook it until it starts to boil.

Well about the rest, I was going to do the Summer Squash, too, but we will have that tonight for our Carb with Turkey burgers and Asparagus (purchased).

oldnewgreenredo

So that leaves the 1/2 bag of peppers, a purchased Yellow Pepper and

oldnewgreenredo

these homegrown garden onions. I have had lots of onions through the Spring and early summer. and the ones in the raised planters should be ready next week. Then I will plant some more for Fall.

oldnewgreenredo

So chop, chop, chop...loosely and these I did a bit large, and the onions and other pepper a bit smaller.
These were tossed into boiling water and less than 2 minutes then into the a fresh ice bath.

oldnewgreenredo

Perfect assortment for any cooked dish. Now into the freezer bags.

oldnewgreenredo

The Pepper mix is still draining..but, these I just label the date..you can see what everything is.

I use GOOD quality freezer bags. I Reuse them by washing the bags out and drying them and then using for leftovers.

oldnewgreenredo

The fresh on sale Asparagus...pre-cooked in the microwave for 5 minutes so it can keep a day or two more. We will still have fresh for our omelets in the morning besides. Again, hubby bought extra because of the sale.

Cleaning up is always the REDO or REUSE  by Composting. We add some paper products, paper towels and coffee filters. Everything else is vegetable waste or green, egg shells, from the kitchen except for any meat or dairy products, NO Banana peels, and we are trying to eliminate seeds goes into the compost. (Bread products are toasted and fed to the birds)

All this gets layered with grass cuttings, bush clippings and any non-weed greenery we have from the yard. Hubby layers in Peat Moss and this year, Vermiculite to loosen our clay laden soil. We have been amending the soil here since the early 80's and well, it's still clay...blacker clay, but clay, lol.

oldnewgreenredo

While cleaning the kitchen the full bowl of compost went out, and I started a new bowl. Mornings coffee grounds and an egg shell.

I was careful not to throw any pepper seeds into here,

Honestly we have more plants growing in our compost pile then the garden.

oldnewgreenredo

I wonder what all those Squash/Pumpkin looking plants are??
Tomatoes, peppers, maybe Watermelon? We had Watermelon on Memorial Day...LOL.
All those in the back I think are Tomato plants?

How are your
Garden Veggies Doing?

Midwest Gardening 2024: Last of the Garden!

 Ad-Free Blog

Quick Post this morning!

Sunday, my son and family came to help us with the yard. We got the backyard pretty well cleaned up and the Caladium and Dahlia bulbs dug up to store. All the smaller pots cleaned and emptied and stored. Most of the dirt from the pots went into the bin in the greenhouse, and the pots that I use to start things are there also.

Since I still can't bend over or exert more than 10# lifting or pushing, my D-in Love dug up all the beets and Carrots and Parsnips.  I knew they would be pretty good if slugs didn't get at them. All the greens have been rich and lustrous.

I made Beet Soup in August when I did the last thinning and had lots of small beets, and the soup was delicious.

The Carrot patch was going to be a mystery, because when I thinned twice they were very tiny.

I watered heavily two days before, so they came up pretty easy except for the really long parsnips.

Here is what I planted last Spring. Dates I have are 5/16-18 into the ground. This was the last area of the garden to be planted besides transplanting peppers and tomatoes.

Baker Creek Heirloom Seeds Parsnips...
wait unti you see.

New variety I tried, Danver by Ferry Morris. Normally I do Chantenay but they are really small. The Danvers An incredibly sweet, stubby, carrot for mass planting.

I tried this blend, thinking of roasted carrots for the Holidays.

I tried a bit of old seeds ..these are Faxil Rainbow Carrots. All the areas of carrots came up thick!

I planted two kinds of beets...

Detroit Beets are the workhorse of home gardens. We always get beets from them, but the critters and bugs loved them too. So this year I planted all my roots in semi-shade in a different area.

This is roughly a Gallon of Beets. YUM and all a pretty nice size. I will get maybe two jars of small beets for pickled beets.

The others were those tape strips-not sharing the package (Burpee)---which performed Very poorly...compared to everything else---and only 6" away from all the wonderful beets and carrots we did GET!

Here's Our Haul!

Lots of CARROTS, there are some other small carrots in here besides the Danvers.
We sorted according to size. My D-in-Love took a big bag of everything home. These photos are after she got paid in produce...lol.
This bowl is  18" wide for scale!

These are our large Carrots and Parsnips.

This is a HUGE Bowl -18 inches,
WOW!

We did a hose scrub. I'm storing them like this in our porch fridge, instead of scrubbing them so clean they spoil fast. I can always scrub them before cooking.

I have lots of recipe's planned.

I'm a little disappointed that there weren't more of the different colors, and it is hard to tell which are parsnips and which are carrots. But, we love both so it won't matter when they are being eaten.

This is the area that I blocked off with fine mesh over our normal fencing.

Clearly the bunnies didn't get in here....

YAY!
